So I have a few 'guilty pleasures' when it comes to music; and one of my biggest is a song with lyrics that are just so ridiculously egotistical, self assured, and cocky. I was going to make a spam of songs with lyrics like this, but it kind of got overwhelmed with songs with hand!claps. I don't even know anymore, but whatever, songs with hand claps, so you can clap along like a pro.

First off the bat, Chromeo with fancy footwork, live on some TV show, Jimmy something? Whatever, it has hand claps and is their set is just hilarious.
<lj-embed id="119" />

Next up, a band that have referred to Chromeo as being one of their favourite bands. Cobra Starship & Church of Hot Addiction
<lj-embed id="120" />

Of into the land of electro with The Presets; Youtube wont let me embed this video. at all
(challenge of the post; clap in time along to these hand claps. I still fail at it.)

and the band best known for dancing on treadmills would like to applaud you for being so damn hot;
<lj-embed id="121" />

Things that go well with handclaps? Footstomps.
<lj-embed id="122" />

handclaps at the strip club;
<lj-embed id="123" />

handclaps and tambourines;
<lj-embed id="124" />

and ex-boyband members sure do love their handclaps
(once again, can't embed it sorry!)

science loves handclaps as well;
<lj-embed id="125" />

do highfives count as handclaps?;
<lj-embed id="126" />

and hey, the dandy warhols know how to get their crowds to handclap along;
<lj-embed id="127" />

but not quite as well as fall out boy do;
<lj-embed id="128" />

and then the gorillaz jumped in on the hand clap action too;
<lj-embed id="129" />

and it isn't too long till daft punk get involved;
<lj-embed id="130" />

but never fear, here come the men in black;
<lj-embed id="131" />

I've actually completely run out of film clips that have hand claps. this makes me sad. *sad face* (totally an invite to recommend me handclap!film clips.)

So hi flist, you might be sick of seeing this picture. (HOWEVER it's now officially finished and this'll be the last time I'll post about it here, promise!)

it's also up on DeviantArt where I have written a brilliant bit of commentary for the picture, so I'm going to be lazy and copy paste it here:

"Um, it's cobra starship, and they came here to make you dance tonight?

SO: Ryland -> Alex
Vicky-T -> Gabe -> Nate

This is a sketch page in my sketchbook that kind of took on an epic life of it's own. It started with a dude who looked kinda like Ryland, but then there had to be an Alex, and then oh man, everyone else. PLUS checkers, and swirls and stars and speech bubbles and text and everything I love to do all in the one picture.

Cobra Starship probably own themselves, or pete wentz owns them. Either way, I don't own them, they're not original characters, but a band, who play ridiculous music."

(for those interested in 'the process', I updated the original 'progress post' to include the latest stages. )

- Work was pretty sweet today, only one patient went home, so there wasn't much I had to do AND kitchens brought me a tray of cakes. Really awesome cakes, with jam and cream and flakes of chocolate and they were super moist and probably the best cake ever. I love you kitchens staff. <3

- FC and her ridiculously rad sister came to visit, and brought me chocolate and condensed & sweetened milk in a tube. I didn't know milk came in tubes before today

- Then we went to Scott's. It was very much like summer holidays with the impromptu parties @ his house. I miss those. (It needed a fire in a wheelbarrow, but well, apparently his house isn't a fire!party house.)

-And oh, I did more of my drawing.
LAST NIGHT:

TONIGHT:

S'almost done, but oh man, it's nearly 1 am again, and once again, work at 8am tomorrow.
I don't know why, but sometimes, I spend a ridiculous amount of time on a single page of my sketchbooks, generally, I just draw things and fill the rest of the page up with checkers and swirls and other fun things, like text and song lyrics. Usually this happens when I'm drawing with pens and bored.
Tonight I'm sharing with you all one of these over the top pages, but in stages, so you can see how it develops a little? (It's FAAAAASCINATING insight into my drawing process or something)

When I'm finished, I'll scan it in, high quality and make it look awesomer or something. idk.

FIRST I drew this, up in the top corner of the page.

Kinda felt he looked a bit like thiiiis guy from Cobra Starship;

Which made me think, I want to draw ALL of Cobra Starship:

(left to right: Vicky-T, Gabe, Ryland, Nate (no shirt), Alex (striped shirt))

So I added in Alex and Vicky T, and made Ryland more Rylandy (oh stubble!beards<3):

This is it at the moment, Nate is still missing (he's roughly sketched circles), and Gabe needs a better mouth, the one he has at the moment, kinda bugs me, but omg I have work at 8 and it's nearly one am and WHY THE HELL AM I NOT ASLEEP!?

ETA:

Hope you enjoyed/found this interesting?
You know, there was a years gap between 'art dumps' on my LJ, so I kinda have a stock pile of art to post (say what?? didn't I just post almost 100 photos of my art journals?!?) and I kinda miss just spamming my LJ with art.

This has no category other than fan art!:

Oh the Mighty Boosh. Such brilliance.

Indian Epics laziness:
I was actually meant to do a creative WRITING piece each week. Generally, this happened (say what?) but there were a fair few weeks where I decided I'd rather creatively retell the weeks readings through pictures;

Mahabharata; Amba and Sikhandin, they're actually the same person, Amba was like, hell bent on killing this dude Bishma because he totally rejected her and she's bitter. but Amba got old and died or something (but anger kept her alive for HUNDREDS of years) and she was reborn as this boy, Sikhandin; who is the one who kills the undefeatable Bishma, yaaay for him. (I kinda hated the entire story, and this was the best I could bother doing.)
(I also stole a photographs lips; shhhh. (I have no idea anymore what photo it was either...)

Ramayana retellings;

Well, this was my first one, Sita was so headstrong and independent, and I was kinda in love with her, but then the whole deer incident happened and she was a total ditz and yeah, Lakshmana was there, and he was badass and sarcastic and oh, Sita was no longer my favourite.

I decided that the ramayana would be awesome as a battle of the bands, rather than you know, a fight between good and evil. Rama's band was kinda, alt-rock, Ravana's was punk-goth. Sita had been seduced over to Ravana's band, and Rama was incredibly emo about it all, and Hanuman looked like Patrick Stump... kinda.

This is in the same 'universe', but actually told more story (being a comic-rough and all??). The one above wasn't actually one of my retellings, it was kinda, just because I needed to draw it. (honestly, we had LA Gangster versions of the ramayana, and lesbian love affairs for the mahabharata, I was allowed to have a battle of the bands version; It was like a mini fandom, but actually a class.)

and because you know, I do so adore lakshmana you also can have one of my written-retellings; maybe you'll love Lakshmana too:

Sometimes Lakshmana questioned his decision to follow Rama and Sita into exile. They were lovely people, sure, and he loved his brother dearly. It’s just some days, the wonder couple really got on his nerves. Today, it just so happened to be one of those days.

It all began with Sita bursting into their cabin, babbling about some golden deer she’d seen outside. Lakshmana couldn’t really remember exactly what was said, but he's pretty sure it went something like this:
“Rama! There’s a deer outside! It’s golden, and it has diamonds and rubies on its legs and I want it. Now.” Sita cried out. Lakshmana hated it when she was like this, high pitched and demanding.
“Right, I’ll get it for you then. Where is it?” Rama asked, getting up out of his chair and heading towards the door.
“You’re kidding, right? Since when are deer made of gold and jewels? It’s obviously a trap.” Lakshmana cried out in disbelief. How had Rama not picked up on the possibility that the deer was a trap?
“You don’t know all the animals in the world, there could be a new species of deer that’s gold, and you haven’t heard of.” Rama said, almost childishly. Lakshmana gave his brother a pained look.
“You know, by the time you two have finished arguing, it’ll have gotten away. Can’t you just go outside and look at it?” The trio, on Sita’s request went outside to look at this deer of hers. It really was quite brilliant looking.
“ I’ll go get it for you Sita, don’t worry!” Rama soothed his wife.
“ But Rama, it’s a golden deer, we live in a forest filled with demons. It has to be a trap. “ Lakshmana pleaded.
“Look Lakshmana, if it’s a demon, I’ll kill it easily. If it isn’t, I’ll capture it as a pet for Sita.” Rama explained, apparently regaining his ability to use logic.
“I can take it back with us to Ayodhya, and it can roam through the palace gardens. Wouldn’t that be great?” Sita cried happily and Lakshmana tried to just tune her out entirely.
“If you think it’s so harmless Rama, how about I go after it? You can stay here with Sita.” Lakshmana suggested, mostly keen to get away from Sita for the afternoon. For some reason she had become a complete airhead today.
“ You couldn’t catch it Lakshmana, I just know it!” Sita cried out, and stormed back inside.

Lakshmana looked to his brother, and saw it coming, the moment where Rama makes Lakshmana feel like a grade-a jerk with nothing more than a look. Rama turned to him, sighed. “Look Lakshmana, I’m going after that deer. You stay here, and look after her. I’ll be back soon.” And with that, he set out after the deer, which had just taken flight.

Lakshmana turned back to look at their little house, having just disappointed Rama and upset Sita, he was dreading going back inside.

Honestly, could today get any worse?

Bandom-y stuff:

Spencer Smith and Jon Walker, so much love for them.

Spencer and Jon some more.

Travis and Gabe

also, Greta!

My latest (as in today) project;

I was kinda intending to do an 11 piece series, based on the idea of a mixtape... I'm kind of over it. It's the whole, 11 pieces, and me having to buy 6 more canvases when my entire intention was to idk, USE the canvases I already had. (not stock up on more.)

So I'm thinking of doing something more compact and fun, and have been doing washes for the backgrounds of two canvases today;

YELLOW!

BLUE!

my desk... such a mess.

my hands, also a mess.

and now, I'm going to probably go to bed, and sleep, because I'm kinda having an awful art block today and it's making me miserable. *MOPE*
the biggest online dance battle, ever

Step Up 2 the Streets; one of the few sequels to be 1,000,000 times better than the original movie, has since sparked an online dance battle that is just so many levels of win.

I decided to put together this post, mostly so I can pimp it out with more ease, and have all the videos in one place.

To start, the final dance battle in Step Up 2: The Streets
<lj-embed id="104" />

Jon Chu = an awesome dance-movie director, for serious.

He has a blog; one day, Adam Sevani (Moose from Step Up 2) feels the blog is too boring; so they challenge Miley Cyrus and her bff Mandy to a dance off

<lj-embed id="105" />

Miley and Mandy (the M&M Cru) respond:
<lj-embed id="106" />

and the ACDC Crew top it, in EPIC proportions; bringing in Adam Sandler, Chris Brown, Lindsay Lohan, the cast of Hairspray: (Amanda Bynes, Britany Snow and Elijah Kelly), to name a few. They also dance to a technoed-out version of Miley's 'best of both worlds'
<lj-embed id="107" />

And now we played the waiting game;

Miley and Mandy kept pimping out their upcoming video
<lj-embed id="108" />

<lj-embed id="109" />

and the ACDC Crew were impatient, and posted outtakes from the last video, and called for the M&M Cru to 'step their game up'
<lj-embed id="110" />

<lj-embed id="111" />

and finally; the M&M Cru responded; (roping in Ryan Seacrest and Joey Fatone, and that Channing Tatum dude to try and out do ACDC's celebrity overload)
<lj-embed id="112" />

and as response, the ACDC crew have challenged the M&M Cru to dance off in person. Then they danced to daft punk's robot rock, and I was impressed

<lj-embed id="113" />

so that's the battle so far, I for one am looking forward to this face-to-face dance off, because it should be amazingly overproduced!

Art Journals, an attempted guide.

Art Journals, an attempted guide.

Right, so I’ve been chatting with the newest addition to my flist; wandrin_dreamer and at her request (kind of) I’m putting together a post which is part a spamming of my many, many sketch books and art journals, but also a ‘how to’ guide on making your own art journals (which you can feel free to ignore, completely, as art journals are individual things and there’s no ‘guide’ in how to make one. At all.)
So where to begin?

art journals vs. sketchbooks

There’s a bit of disambiguation re: sketchbooks and ‘art journals’, mostly because they’re just labels for pretty much, the same thing.
Honestly, you can use your sketchbook/journal to just draw in, or you can use it to record ideas, to experiment with new mediums, to sketch concepts for more finished pieces, or a mix of all of these things. Some people use their art journals as a diary with sketches and snippets taken from real-life events.

Stuff you need to make your own art-journal;

- Er… a book.

Honestly, there’s nothing more you actually NEED, once you’ve got your book, just start putting things in it. Best bit of advice; don’t get a book you feel like you’re going to ‘ruin’, because you’ll get too hung up on making everything you do in it look fantastic. This is actually, a bad thing.

awesome guideline for art journal content that I have from school journals and the likes

For my very final art journal for year 12, we were given a sectioned checklist to use so that everything we need to have in our journals was included,
This was that checklist:

Visual Diary Checklist

SECTION A: VISUAL REFERENCES AND INFLUENCES (15 pages)
- A selection of theme, topic of subject
- Brainstorming of possible ideas
- Collection of images and information for visual reference
- Preliminary researching for influences of artists works
SECTION B: DEVELOPMENT OF IDEAS (7 pages)
- Generation of sketches for early ideas
- Exploration, variation of ideas
SECTION C: EXPERIMENTATION OF MEDIA (15 pages)
- Research and exploration of media and techniques
- Experimentation with a variety of media
SECTION D: EXPANDING AND RESOLVING IDEAS (7 pages)
- Exploration and extension of ideas
SECTION E: FINAL PLAN (2 pages)
- Final detailed plan of major work with complete explanations
ARTISTS RESEARCH (7 pages)

NOW this is the hardcore “I’ve got a few weeks to get an idea developed and finished” kind of art journal, which is also assessed for grades that help you go to university, and is a big deal.

There is a simpler version that I tend to use, and it is as follows;

-> DEVELOPMENT OF IDEAS
This section is where I record little snippets of ideas, song lyrics, sketches, quotes, themes, pretty much any little idea I have related to my overall ‘Vague Ideas’ of what I want to do. (Vague Ideas could be “I want to paint something”, or “I want to do something epically awesome”, as you can see, they’re pretty vague)

-> VISUAL REFERENCES and INFLUENCES
Influences is my favourite section in this part. I love finding new artists, and looking at their portfolios, looking at the way they paint, the way they draw, the subject matter they tend to favour, just everything. When I find an artist who’s particularly interesting, I’ll print a few of their works, and paste them into my journal, writing down what it is I like about them. (me being me, these artists are often graffiti artists, tattoo artists, comic artists and a few quirky commercial artists.)
Visual references are just photos of things that inspire. A colour combination, a texture, an interesting object, whatever. They get stuck in and notes are added just so I never forget what it is I found so inspiring about it.

-> EXPERIMENTATION
Experimenting is ridiculously fun, this is where I try new things with my art, compiling all the things I’ve discovered along the way in my visual ref and influences researching. Say an artist has an interesting way of colouring things; this is the part of the journal where I give it a go myself. (It is important though, to sort of try and bring your own edge to this as well, not just copy other artist’s styles!)

-> EXPANDING AND RESOLVING IDEAS.
And here’s where I sit down, look over my journal, and think ‘hmm, so what the hell am I going to do with all these ideas; and I take my favourites, and see what I can create out of them. This section is filled with concept sketches, musing, and idea building. It’s the stuff that I’ll refer to most when I’m creating the final art works.

ALSO; I split the journal up with tape-enforced paper tags, and just flip from section to section depending on what I want to work on. I like to section it off so it’s easier to look through later when I’m trying to ‘resolve my ideas’; I know where to find it all because it’s not scattered in order of when I thought it, but instead, sorted by ‘what kind of thought’ it is.

a hell of a lot of pictures (what speep puts in her art journals)

!! It is very important, when looking at these, to remember, that they range from a selection of 10 journals. This isn’t the one book, and there are many pages in the books that just have nothing of importance on them. (I’ve included some of these nothing pages, just for the fun of it.) !!

SKETCHBOOK COVERS and BACKS
I love decorating my sketchbooks, makes them more personal.

This one is my latest, I'm using it for theory/experimentation for a painting project I'm working on.

black one if my current sketchbook that comes everywhere with me. I've come to love the solid!spine, rather than the spiral!spine.

a back of a cover!

(the back of the pink book, and the page behind it.)

this one is my year 12 second semester journal; it should be kinda easy to pick which images were taken from it; they have the masking tape tags everywhere!

I had a phase of buying journals with coloured, plastic covers. Some of them got names, like Misha, the pink one.

DEVELOPMENT OF IDEAS
Here's some plotting of ideas, notes, collections of ideas, character designs etc, this stuff, far from impressive.

Some of the character design work for my indian epics project

character notes for the brotherhood in x-men:evolution.

These two are the very very early planning stuff for the paqman album art. I was coming up with ideas for the dyads (the finished dyad is found here)

These two were early ideas for this
There's also two other versions I was experimenting with; day-sky and night-sky

became this and has a not so good tutorial, for how I did the sketch.

This sketch was fashion design for a bigger picture; the lineart and the final work.

Check out the bottom of this one, see the couple there??

oh it's a sketch! which was then turned into this work in progress - and the the final picture!

VISUAL REFERENCES
I tend to actually not keep this stuff in journals, I have a lined exercise book I tape them into. It's like an epic book of anatomy and perspective. But I did put them into my school journals, for the grade points...

INFLUENCES
Oh, I love researching artists <3

Jim Mahfood!

Dave Crosland!

Anthony Lister! <3 <3 <3

Graffiti!! <3 (shh, this counts as an artist.)

and also things that influence me (movies, comics, songs, etc)

EXPERIMENTATION
This stuff, is mad fun. border="0" alt="Photobucket">
(from Tripod; comedy band)

and I also take prompts from drunk people;
and finally!
This is a mini tour of the process behind one of my art majors. This is actually the worst art major I ever did (a B-grade, so I can't really complain). The unit was Sculpture, and trust me when I say I just am absolutely hopeless at it.

So we have the original concept sketch;

which was followed eventually by;

and then finally this;

(please note, the art major never ended up looking like this. I really fail at sewing, but wearable-art was actually the lesser evil of my options, I am ridiculously fail at sculpture, I don't see things in 3D so well...)

Now, to work out how to make this dress, out of material.

early concepts for the flowers. I ended up going with cutting flower shapes from silk-ish stuff, and then bunching it in the middle and sewing each flower into shape by hand. My fingers were covered in pin prick holes, and it took forever. *regrets making that decision*

The leaves? just as ridiculous.

I used rope for branches, made blossom buds (more time consuming than the flowers, and I only made a very limited amount. Then I sewed it all onto a skirt/top combo thing I'd sewn (which was awful, because I'm fail at sewing remember??)

I kept a progress diary.

NOW the shame here is I can't find the top. I did however find the skirt, and the skirt was my favourite part (the top, such a disaster zone)

The stuff at the bottom? just scraps left over from the flowers, soaked in a jar of dirty paint water. I like to think they represent 'the dead flowers', as they at the top are buds, that then bloom, then fall and rot at the bottom. My theme was 'the transience of life and death' or something equally wanky.

SO ANYWAY, that's it.

I have a lot more stuff I could show you all, but honestly? I'm over it. There's another 6 sketch books in my cuboard that I haven't even gone through; but I think you've probably gotten the gist of how I work now?

Hope some of this was interesting/helpful to you! <3
So, to make up for my lack of art dumps;

Well for one; my indian epics project (9 pages of rushed comic, fuck yeah?)

An entry for a club-competition on DeviantArt; I've been in the "Brotherhood_Club" since um, I joined DevArt in 2003. As dorky and as lame as X-men Evo is, I still love it, and the brotherhood kids. (Theme; Illegal Activities; I went with 'underage drinking']
This one was... copic markers and this awesome black brush pen I had that's dead now. I miss it.

More paqman stuff, mostly because I adore anton the antique robot, and have far too much fun drawing the guy. Also, the buildings were mad fun to draw, though they might make the image a bit cluttered. (It's a city, since when isn't a city cluttered though??)
.... photoshop! and that's about all I used.

And this is my most recent project; actually, I was doing it around the same time as the indian epics comic thing. I've been itching to just paint something for months, so, well, I did.
The blue one, didn't really plan anything, just attacked a canvas with paint, and eventually came up with heart hands (based of a picture of spencer smith (panic@the disco); the other two are also band!related; used gym class heroes photo refs for them. - I wouldn't consider them portraits of them, because they look nothing like them, but there's a sparkly, glittery gay element to them that kinda suits?) SO anyway, these ones are acrylic, glitter and sharpie on canvas. (Oh yeah, mixed media all the way)

I also need sleep now. *sighs at body clock*

well, I'm the slowest person ever at reading, it would seem. I've had the book for a fair while, but essays and various important deadlines have consumed so much of my free time, that I've only just recently finished the last book.

and I didn't entirely hate it. I wouldn't say that I loved it, because I didn't. but I didn't hate it either. (I'm fairly sure I could say I actually liked it, but then I read the epilogue again and gaged on the awful.)

Anyway, my number one gripe with the book isn't the epilogue or anything like that, it's that Fred never finished that sentence about the last time Percy made a joke. Fucking jerk. I wanted to know.

I'm not really sure I actually understood what was going on, but dude, Shia was in it, and he was seriously just playing an older Louis Stevens (Even Stevens for the win?)

SO yeah, far better movie than harry potter 5, if you are sitting at a cinema sometime this week, thinking 'hmm, what should I see' and you're choice is harry potter or transformers, seriously save yourself the two hours of being mostly bored, and go see transformers instead. It's got robot death matches. Heaps better than Emma Watson.

I haven't done one of these in ages!

First off, I've been on a Robin Hood kick, I'm loving the new BBC version, as lame as it can be at points. (Mostly, I love Robin's Hoodie. Best thing ever.)

So anyway, as part of a challenge on a robin hood art community, I made these things.

They're like some bizarre chose your own pairings swap cards really.

etc. etc.
(I couldn't be arsed to make any other characters.)

and some sketches, that don't have much detail, whoo.

Now for not!robin hood art

Dyads!

The top one is dots, dots are rad, and I'm sure you all love them lots, the bottom one is made of metal and wood, two oposites that coexist I guess?

and looky, DevArt has embedding. It's bulky and kinda annoying, but saves me time with the whole uploading thing. So I'm all for it!
<lj-embed id="67" />
to be killed rather than kill by *speep on deviantART

And I made one of those flash dress up games, but got bored of it.

I have more, on the other computer, but Dad's been using it to program things, so I can't really access them.
